Trustees Week 2021 - Sabbir Karim
This week, as part of Trustees Week, we are highlighting the great work of all our trustees and today we would like to share with you the amazing work of one of our Trustees, Sabbir Karim.
We asked Sabbir if he could summarise The Sreepur Village in three words what would he say, Sabbir told us, "Hope, Education and Equality".
The Sreepur Village - 30 Remarkable Years (1989-2019)
The Sreepur Village, Shishu Polli Plus, was established at Sreepur in 1989 on a 15-acre site and has over the last 30 years, successfully re-integrated 897 mothers and 3043 children back into the community. The charity still strongly believes that poverty should not separate mothers from their children and in doing so continues to empower vulnerable women so that more families can gain a better quality of life for the future.
Christmas Day
This Christmas Day, we wished all of our children at The Sreepur Village, a very Happy Birthday. Every year we choose this day to celebrate the birthdays of all our beneficiaries as the majority have come to us abandoned and will never know their real date of birth.
Celebrating Pohela Boishakh
Pohela Boishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year, was celebrated in The Sreepur Village with traditional festivities and enthusiasm. Every year during Pohela Boishakh, the country’s biggest cultural festival, people of all walks of life, especially children and teenagers, come out at daybreak wearing traditional dresses eager to celebrate their most cultural day. The festivals of Pohela Boishakh have become an integral part of Bengladesh since it began over six centuries ago. Mughal Emperor Akbar introduced the Bangla calendar in 1556, as part of the Georgian Calendar, in a bid to streamline the timing of land tax collection. As Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) approaches this weekend preparations are well under way at The Sreepur Village. It is here once more, that charming time of the year when the age-old Bengali spirit of festivity is renewed to welcome the Bengali New Year. Pohela Boishakh is practically around the corner and there are arrangements a plenty to praise this celebration.
The Sreepur Village Celebrates the 48th Independence Day
On Sunday, The Sreepur Village, celebrated the 48th Independence Day by participating in different programmes organised by the Sreepur Village School.
As a first phase of the programme, the children of the Sreepur Village School celebrated the free spirit of the Bangladeshi Independence day with great fervour and joy. In excited anticipation, they gathered in the school grounds for an assembly while the national flag was hoisted by Pat and Imran (our two directors) and the melody of the national anthem of Bangladesh played in the background.
International Women's Day at The Sreepur Village
In celebration of International Women’s Day 2018, the mothers’ association of the Sreepur Village arranged a cultural programme and led a discussion which focussed on this year’s theme of #PressforProgress. It was an opportunity for the Sreepur mothers to celebrate womanhood in all its form and during the two-hour long discussion, the mothers primarily discussed the importance of self-reliance, training and development, they also thanked The Sreepur Village for supporting them and their children.

As International Mother Language Day, held annually on February 21, is such a significant event, we would like to share with you, in detail, the activities that The Sreepur Village organised on this most memorable day.
International Mother Language Day
At the crack of dawn, everyone walked bare foot to lay wreaths at the alter of the Shaheed Minar (a memorial monument) and paid their respects to the language martyrs of 1952.
Christmas Day at The Sreepur Village
On Christmas Day, we wished all of our children at The Sreepur Village, a very Happy Birthday!
As most of our children are unaware of their true date of birth, for a long-time The Sreepur Village has spent Christmas day as a day to mark all of their birthdays. Being able to bring happiness and smiles to lots of young faces is a most joyous experience and we are delighted that each year we are able to celebrate something that they can treasure forever.
Celebrating our 1,000 mother to join Sreepur!
For the last 28 years, The Sreepur Village has been working hard to help destitute single mothers and their children, aiding their development in every aspect of life so that they can live confidently and independently in an economically self-reliant society. Following this path, we recently had the opportunity to rehabilitate our 1,000 mother, Rakhi.
Celebrating Eid UL Adha in The Sreepur Village
Eid UL Adha, the second most significant Muslim festival, was recently celebrated in The Sreepur Village. A three- day-long programme Eid, in The Sreepur Village, is marked with a number of lively activities such as singing, dancing and games. Every mother and child from the village went to each and every event, in which they sported not only their best attire but lots of enthusiasm too.
National Mourning Day
People from all walks of life of Bangladesh, observed the National Mourning Day today with due respect and solemnity, marking the 42nd death anniversary of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh.
