My Trip to Bangladesh, by Emma our UK Fundraiser
I oversee fundraising in the UK for The Sreepur Village so before my trip I was feeling fairly confident of what to expect and see in the heart of Bangladesh or so I thought I did. What I didn’t expect to see was over 700 smiling faces, children content to play with just a leaf and mothers willing to do the smallest of jobs so that they could have the biggest results, like feed their families.
Christmas Day at The Sreepur Village
On Christmas Day, we wished all of our children at The Sreepur Village, a very Happy Birthday!
As most of our children are unaware of their true date of birth, for a long-time The Sreepur Village has spent Christmas day as a day to mark all of their birthdays. Being able to bring happiness and smiles to lots of young faces is a most joyous experience and we are delighted that each year we are able to celebrate something that they can treasure forever.
Celebrating Eid UL Adha in The Sreepur Village
Eid UL Adha, the second most significant Muslim festival, was recently celebrated in The Sreepur Village. A three- day-long programme Eid, in The Sreepur Village, is marked with a number of lively activities such as singing, dancing and games. Every mother and child from the village went to each and every event, in which they sported not only their best attire but lots of enthusiasm too.
Flooding in Bangladesh
The recent flooding in Bangladesh has submerged more than a third of the low-lying area of the country, affecting over 7.5 million inhabitants and killing at least 147 people. Although the overall flood situation in most affected areas has improved, as the flood water comes down the situation is actually becoming worse. In this current state, the flood-hit people are passing their days in misery as most of the farmers have lost their crops, cattle, and fish farms.
Jamai Mela: A day for Sons-in Law
“I left the village five years ago and because I now have a job I don’t get enough time to visit, but my heart always remains here. I do not have a house or parents so #TheSreepurVillage is everything to me. I can’t wait for their call and especially for this day because this day is just for us”.

The project has been a huge part of my life since my mother first travelled to Bangladesh in 1977, and I have probably met many of you, the supporters, during the years as my mother has asked me to carry various objects or provide basic IT support.

Extreme poverty leads to family breakdown and in Bangladesh many young boys run away from home and travel enormous distances riding on train carriage links or on the roof. Many end up in Dhaka and are exploited by working from dawn to dusk for roadside street vendors. |
