Since lockdown was announced, our mothers have been busy hand-making Christmas decorations made out of bamboo strips, carved from the trees naturally grown in the heart of The Sreepur Village, the place they now call home and where they get to learn a number of new vocational skills that will empower their families with a future of hope and independence.

Celebrating Pohela Boishakh

Celebrating Pohela Boishakh

April 16, 2018

Pohela Boishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year, was celebrated in The Sreepur Village with traditional festivities and enthusiasm. Every year during Pohela Boishakh, the country’s biggest cultural festival, people of all walks of life, especially children and teenagers, come out at daybreak wearing traditional dresses eager to celebrate their most cultural day. The festivals of Pohela Boishakh have become an integral part of Bengladesh since it began over six centuries ago. Mughal Emperor Akbar introduced the Bangla calendar in 1556, as part of the Georgian Calendar, in a bid to streamline the timing of land tax collection. However, true to their centuries-old tradition, people from all walks of life of the country welcome the Bengali New Year 1425, with new hopes and aspirations for a better and peaceful ye

Garment Training and Mothers Livelihood

Garment Training and Mothers Livelihood

September 29, 2017

The garment industry of Bangladesh has played an important role in economically enriching a large group of poor and vulnerable women. Today, approximately 80% of garment workers are women. So, having this source of income not only helps women to lead a better life but it also provides them with more confidence at home, a social sphere and higher self-esteem. The most important thing is, however, that they can survive and help save their families. The number of women from impoverished northern districts of Bangladesh joining the garments sector are much lower due to lack of awareness of opportunities, risks of relocation, and uncertainty about securing a job quickly.

Flooding in Bangladesh

Flooding in Bangladesh

August 30, 2017

The recent flooding in Bangladesh has submerged more than a third of the low-lying area of the country, affecting over 7.5 million inhabitants and killing at least 147 people. Although the overall flood situation in most affected areas has improved, as the flood water comes down the situation is actually becoming worse. In this current state, the flood-hit people are passing their days in misery as most of the farmers have lost their crops, cattle, and fish farms.
