Trustees Week 2021 - Derek Palmer

November 01, 2021

We are launching this year's trustees week by sharing with you the work of one of our dedicated trustees, Derek Palmer.

After graduating from University, Derek Palmer joined De Beers in 1972 as a statistician. Over the next 30 years, he was appointed to increasingly senior positions from Market Research Manager, Marketing Director of Europe and America, Director of Asia Pacific and finally as Communications Director.

Derek then joined Pluczenik, one of the world’s largest Sight holders as their Global Marketing Director.

Over the last eleven years, Derek has helped develop downstream marketing activities in every major consumer market.

Derek is married to Pat Kerr, MBE, who founded The Sreepur Village in Bangladesh which over 32 years has been the subject of many documentaries.
We asked Derek if he could describe The Sreepur Village in just three words what would he say, "Secure, Friendly and Family".

Derek lives in London ,Thailand and Bangladesh.

Pat continues to dedicate her life to hundreds of destitute Bangladeshi mothers and children in need of shelter, safety and care.

It is with the generous support that we receive from our donors, trustees, corporate partners and volunteers that The Sreepur Village is able to provide more families with life-saving opportunities that will empower them with hope for a brighter future.

In 2018, with the aid of CIPRB and one of their trustees, Becky Horsbrugh, the Sreepur Village started to run swimming lessons in their pond in the village grounds.  The lessons, since this date, take place every year during the months of June and July, and are now taught by a number of Sreepur staff who have since been trained to facilitate the programme each year.

Approximately sixty children, aged 6-12, take part each year. They will learn how to swim 25 metres freestyle, tread water or float for 30 seconds as well as perform a rescue from dry
land.  As half the number of deaths from drowning occur in 1-5 year olds, having an older child trained in dry-land rescue is pivotal in striving to keep this devastating number down.

It's British Science Week, 11th 20th March, and one of the activities that the Sreepur Village runs is the creation and nurturing of sack gardens.

This is an aspect of the Mothers Talking Everyday Science project and is a particularly important activity because when the mothers return to mainstream society they will be experienced in how to prepare a container in which to grow food plants and how to care for them.
