Paper-making
Our handmade paper section started in 1991 after a generous donation from one of our UK sponsors enabled us to buy the machinery, tin baths and frames needed to start up production. We now make a wide range of different weights of paper from tissue through to card in a wide range of colours for sale to local customers. Our wheat straw cards are primarily produced for the UK market. To see how we produce handmade paper and cards, take our photo tour. Cards
Our outreach programme into the local community trains women from the villages to decorate the cards with wheat straw. Paper Dove, a UK company working with fair-trade producers in Bangladesh, helps us with designs and British Airways helps us with freight to the UK so that all proceeds from the cards are returned to Shishu Polli Plus. We have been successful in improving designs and quality year on year, and in December 2008 The Guardian newspaper Money Section called Sreepur cards “The best Xmas card ever?” which resulted in all of our stock of Christmas cards being sold. We are currently able to produce up to 2,000 cards each week and have supplied custom orders to organisations such as HSBC, Tesco, Cancer Research and Unicef. We have also just started to supply the Duty Free shop in Dhaka airport. If you would like to see the 2009 Christmas designs plus the range of blank cards suitable for all occasions during the year, go to www.sreepurcards.org where you can order online.
